Prequel Garments

Prequel Garments

Vintage Inspired Fabrics & Mens Shirts Made in Japan

Prequel Garments is the epitome of heritage mens shirting and clothing, founded in Japan in the early 2020’s with fabric and garment production of Japanese origin. The name Prequel relates of course to cinema, being the story before the main story, or the first part of the story. This story of Prequel is based and developed around the old ways of doing things, developing and incorporating older techniques and styling to create modern garments. This timeless approach, creates a sophistication in their garments that offers a new sense to men's style while clearly rooted in the stories of the past, hence, Prequel. With Prequel Garments you will find mens shirts, pants, and outerwear with a distinct vintage feel to them. This is due to the painstaking process of fabric development and fit development that each garment has. There is a lot of research and storytelling behind each piece of clothing, making every item rich in detail with a made in Japan seal of quality found in every stitch, button, and fit.

Prequel garments pay homage to fabrics of over 100 years ago. In 1907 J. Claude Freres published a dobby and jacquard fabric sample and pattern book, which has become a rich resource for the Prequel design. Each fabric is analyzed in-depth, from thread count, beats used, weaving techniques, yarn dyes, color and cotton structure. This analysis allows for modern Japanese  ingenuity to recreate these fabrics to the smallest of details, binding together past and present, and bringing back to life the fabric stories of the past.

Fabric construction involves superior and premium Japanese craftsmanship. The fabric samples from J. Claude Freres sample book from 1907, were carefully removed from the pages, and thoroughly analyzed in order to recreate and inspire new fabrics of the same feel and atmosphere. Repeated tests and simulations are run with modern techniques to faithfully recreate the density, weave, and structure of these fabrics from 100 years ago. With the vintage samples as a reference point, Prequel is able to produce a wide range of fabrics that are timeless in their feel, and classic in their fashion.

A favorite Prequel fabric and shirt construction is the classic aged check fabric featured on the open collar shirt. The flannel check has an obvious vintage feel to it, as it is 100 year old fabric reincarnated. To accomplish this, Prequel ensured to carefully analyze the structure, hue, and yarn twist. The end result is a fabric that has a soft pre-worn feel to it, a deep look and intriguing pattern that is a clear nod to the past, while maintaining a modern unique charm. When combined with the open collar shirt, it becomes a vintage match made in heaven. The open collar shirt is a timeless design from the early 1900’s, and was popular for use in both sport and leisure. Pendleton would go on to capitalize on this style of shirt, with the Board Shirt. Both of which feature an open camp collar design. This style was right at home on the tennis court, the beach, in the backyard, or on the town. The casual yet sporty look means the open shirt pairs well with shorts, or chinos for a more refined classic ivy style post-war look. Combined with wide leg trousers, the open shirt is versatile for a more casual look, worn open, to create the resort summer look.

The Prequel Classic Indigo Stripe fabric has naturally dyed indigo yarns which will create a unique fading process over the years of use, allowing for a more personalized expression. This fabric is seen on the Prequel 1920’s vintage inspired work shirt. The fabric and cut make a perfect replica of this era work shirt and the aesthetic of the time. Metal buttons are used which were commonplace during this era, which further elevates the design of the shirt.
